Mowing & Maintenance
Thatch is a spongy layer of dead grass between the soil and the green. Too much blocks water, air and fertilizer.

Thatch is dead stems and roots that build up faster than they break down, common in zoysia and bermuda. A thin layer is harmless, but more than about half an inch blocks water and nutrients, shelters insects and disease and gives weeds a place to root. Power raking or vertical mowing pulls much of it out, and the best season is late spring and early summer for warm-season grasses.
We dethatch and power rake lawns across Middle Tennessee, in Nashville yards and on larger properties. We check the thatch layer first, use a power rake or vertical mower at the right depth, collect the debris and follow with feeding and watering so the lawn recovers quickly.
