Weeds in Tennessee Lawns: A Field Guide

A plain-English guide to the most common lawn weeds in Middle Tennessee, how to recognize them, when they show up and what controls each one.

2 minute read

Key takeaways

  • Weeds fall into three groups: grassy weeds, broadleaf weeds and sedges, and each group needs a different product.
  • Timing decides success: some weeds are prevented in spring or fall, others are killed while actively growing.
  • Correct identification saves time and protects your turf.
  • A thick, healthy lawn is the best weed control there is.

Grassy weeds

Crabgrass, goosegrass, foxtail, nimblewill and poa annua are grassy weeds. They look like grass, which makes them hard to remove selectively. Most are annuals that are best stopped with a pre-emergent barrier. Perennial grassy weeds like nimblewill and bermudagrass in fescue need a longer plan.

Crabgrass is the summer classic. Poa annua shows up in cool weather.

Broadleaf weeds

Dandelion, white clover, plantain, henbit, chickweed, wild violet, creeping Charlie and oxalis are broadleaf weeds with wide leaves. Selective broadleaf herbicides kill them without harming most turf, though some, like wild violet and ground ivy, need repeat treatments.

Spring and fall are the best times to treat them.

Sedges

Yellow nutsedge looks like grass but has a triangular stem and grows faster than the lawn. It spreads by underground tubers and loves wet soil. Ordinary weed killers miss it, and it needs a sedge product plus repeat treatments.

Fixing wet spots helps keep it down.

Why weeds win

Weeds take over where turf is thin: compacted soil, shade, mowing too short, drought and low fertility. Fix those and weed control gets easier. Treatments handle the weeds that are there, and habits keep new ones from moving in.

A short lawn assessment can name the cause.

Quick answers

Which weed is the hardest to control?

Nutsedge, wild violet and invasive bermudagrass are among the toughest. They need specific products and repeat treatments.

Can I identify a weed from a photo?

Often yes. Send a clear photo and we will help.
